Gear

Give a woman a reason to shop...
Yes, it's a stereotype, but I happen to fit it so well. We each have a list of must-haves for the trip and all of your must-haves must fit into a carry-on with a max of 16 lbs. (We are load balancing with the books and supplies we are delivering to the orphanage and children's library.)

Here's what I have thus far:
  • waterproof knee-high boots
  • lightweight rain jacket with hood
  • mid-weight water repellent jacket
  • water repellent lightweight trail pants
  • Buff headwear with built-in insect shield (plus a couple of back-up bandanas)
  • various long-sleeve tees and a hoodie tee
  • water purification tablets
  • Ben’s insect repellent wipes and Repel insect spray (100% DEET ... ew!)
  • nuts, Cliff and Kind bars
  • dry shampoo
  • liquid Band-Aid
  • LED flashlight
...all to jam into my new Osprey Talon after dousing with Repel Permanone insect repellent. Eleven pounds ... and counting ...

  1. OK, so all that stuff was necessary, but me and my fellow mission mates would also recommend:
-a travel sleep sack or extra sheet and a pillow case
-"lightload" washcloths (come as a pellet and expand when soaked in water)
    -air freshener
-variety of snacks (after your 672nd Cliff bar, you're ready for something different)
-something waterproof to conceal your money and passport on your person

Haleigh was the only one of all of us with dry feet the day that we waded through the thigh-high raging river. She had rubber rain boots with a neoprene calf (similar to a wet suit) that kept the water out.

And if you think you have enough anti-bacterial cleansing cloths/Huggies wipes/pre-moistened towelettes.... pack about double that amount.
